I was selected for the 2020 Designer in Residence program at the Headlands Center for the Arts. The Designer in Residence program supports Bay Area designers working at the leading edges of their field—individuals who are interested in pushing boundaries and exploring the possibilities of their medium. Working closely with the organization, the Designer in Residence sets the tone for a year’s worth of external communications, designing the majority of Headlands’ graphic collateral. The program is designed to create a cohesive and dynamic aesthetic through the development of a unique body of original work, while mobilizing the Headlands’ pre-existing visual identity in a new way.

Project Space presents site-specific exhibitions that are guided by information and experiences gathered while work is in progress at Headlands. Home to select Artists in Residence each season, as well as occasional group exhibitions by visiting artists and curators, Project Space is a place of exchange among working artists and visitors—a place where ideas are germinated, conversations are shared, and new work is made. Below is the brochure system designed for the Spring, Summer, and Fall 2020 seasons. (The events were ultimately canceled due to Covid-19.)

Artists ask the tough questions. They envision new possibilities. They create community, beauty, and understanding. Whether illuminating the history of the first black-owned gay bar in San Francisco, channeling indigenous design through geometric abstraction, or confronting the perils of climate change through embodied movement, the work and artists Headlands champions are vital to today’s world. In recognition of the interconnectedness of art and activism, Headlands donated 10% of funds and proceeds from their annual art auction, to Bay Area organizations TGI Justice Project (TGIJP) and Anti Police-Terror Project, both of which are working on the frontlines of social justice and anti-oppression.

Believe Only the Caravan’s Trace was an exhibition featuring work by Headlands’ 2019-20 Graduate Fellows, representing seven MFA programs from around the Bay Area. A desire to create new connections marks the novel works of the seven artists. Using diverse media, the artists developed new languages around significant historical events and underrepresented communities.

An end-of-year fundraising campaign was implemented in efforts to help Headlands “seed” bold new programs and a robust network of resources to support artists and their creative processes and strengthen the cultural ecosystem for years to come.
